The Chinese New Year is next Monday, January 23. For those celebrating on that day, I wish you a Happy Chinese New Year. For those who will not be celebrating and don’t know much about it, here is a short list of fun facts about Chinese New Year:

  • According to the Chinese calendar, the new year is the year 4710. It’s also the year of the dragon.
  • In China, it’s the biggest holiday of the year. People go home and visit their family during this time of the year.
  • People use fire-cracker to drive away evil spirits.
  • Chinese New Year also marks the beginning of Spring on the Chinese calendar.
  • Red is the color of happiness. So you will see the color red everywhere during Chinese New Year, from people’s clothes to the food they eat.
  • Parents and grandparents give “red envelopes” containing pocket money to their children and grandchildren during Chinese New Year.
  • “Fortune telling” is popular during Chinese New Year as people want to know the new year will be.
